Chip repairs are often free or a small fee under a comprehensive glass policy. Replacement pricing depends heavily on what is built into the glass.

What affects the cost
What is built into the glass
Heating elements, acoustic layers, rain sensors, head-up display coatings and camera brackets all raise the price of the glass itself, sometimes several times over.
ADAS calibration
If your car has lane keeping or automatic emergency braking, the forward camera behind the screen must be recalibrated after fitting. Skipping it means the safety systems may not work correctly.
OEM or aftermarket glass
Branded original glass costs more than a quality aftermarket equivalent. For most cars aftermarket is perfectly good, but head-up display and some prestige screens are best done with OEM.
Insurance glass cover
Most comprehensive policies include glass cover with a set excess, often £75 to £150 for replacement and nothing for a repair. Glass claims usually do not affect your no-claims discount.
When a windscreen must be replaced
- Any damage larger than 40mm anywhere on the screen.
- Damage over 10mm in the driver's central view (MOT zone A).
- Damage over 40mm elsewhere in the swept area.
- A crack reaching the edge of the glass, which weakens the whole screen.
- Chips directly in front of the ADAS camera or a sensor.
How to pay a fair price
Get a chip repaired quickly. A £50 repair on the day beats a £600 replacement a week later, and most insurers cover repairs with no excess. If you do need a replacement, check whether your quote includes ADAS calibration, because some cheap quotes leave it out.
